Microbial Fuel Cell as a Bioelectrochemical Sensor of Nitrite Ions

The deteriorating environmental quality requires a rapid in situ real-time monitoring of toxic compounds environment including water and wastewater. One the most nitrogen-containing ions is nitrite ion, therefore, it particularly important to ensure that are completely absent surface ground waters as well wastewater or, at least, their concentration does not exceed permissible levels. However, no selective ion electrode, which would enable continuous measurement by bioelectrochemical sensor, available. Microbial fuel cell (MFC)-based biosensor offers sustainable low-cost alternative periodic sampling for laboratory testing. It has been determined, low (0.01–0.1 mg·L?1) moderate (1.0–10 anolyte-model wastewater, voltage drop MFC linearly depends on logarithm proving potential application MFC-based quantitative other water. Higher concentrations (100–1000 could be accurately quantified due significant voltage. In this case can potentially serve early warning device extremely high pollution.
